Google Two-Step Verification FAQ

Will Kenyon use 2SV to secure other non-Google systems?
At this time, 2SV protects Google services like Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Drive. Kenyon uses Duo to protect other Kenyon services.
How do I turn on 2-Step Verification for my Kenyon Google account?
See our 2-Step Verification Enrollment Guide for step-by-step instructions. It takes less than five minutes to turn on 2SV.

If you’re ready now, be sure that you’re signed into your Kenyon Google account in your web browser, then click this link to begin the process.

How can I check if I’ve already turned on 2SV for my Kenyon Google account?
If Google prompts you to provide a verification method—such as enter a verification code, respond to a prompt on your phone, or use your security key—when you log into your Kenyon Google account on a new computer or in a new web browser, then you already have turned on 2SV for your account. Unless you want to update your 2SV settings or verification steps, you don’t need to do anything further.

Still not sure if you have 2SV turned on? Click this link, then log into your Kenyon Google account. If you have already turned on 2SV, you’ll see a page listing your 2SV settings. If you have not already turned on 2SV, you’ll be prompted to sign up now.

Using 2SV
Will I have to provide a verification step each time I log into my Kenyon Google account?
Not necessarily. When you sign into your Kenyon Google account on a new computer, web browser, or mobile device, you will be asked to complete a verification step. You will also have the option to tell Google to trust that device, which means that Google won’t ask you for another verification step when you log in from that web browser or device.

However, some web browser options, such as using Incognito Mode or blocking/deleting cookies, prevent Google from recognizing a browser or device that you have previously trusted.

If you’re using a web browser, computer, or device where you aren’t the primary user—such as an internet kiosk or a friend’s computer—you should not tell Google trust that computer.

How many verification steps should I add?
In order to turn on 2SV, you must add at least one verification step. To ensure that you can always log into your Kenyon Google account as needed, set up at least two verification steps. You might consider adding one option where Google contacts you directly (Google prompt, phone call, or SMS message) and one offline option (Authenticator codes, security key, or backup codes).

Do I need a smartphone to use 2SV?
No. There are several options for verification steps that do not require a smartphone:
  • Receive phone calls or verification codes via SMS messages on a mobile phone
  • Receive a phone call at your office or home phone
  • Use a USB security key, such as a YubiKey
  • Enter backup codes that you have printed and save
I already use the Duo Mobile app on my smartphone. Can I use it with 2SV?
Yes, if you register your Kenyon Google account in the Duo Mobile App. You can use Duo Mobile to generate Authenticator-style TOTP codes. Consider this option if you only want to use one smartphone app with both Duo and Google 2SV. For more information, see Duo's guide to third-party accounts.

NOTE: If you erase your smartphone or upgrade to a new smartphone, Duo Mobile will not transfer your third-party accounts, including your Kenyon Google account. Be sure to set up multiple options for verification steps so you can still log into your Google account if this happens.

Can I generate backup codes to use offline with 2SV?
Yes. You have two options:
  1. If you have a smartphone, set up the Authenticator verification step and use a compatible app (including Duo Mobile) to generate a six-digit code.
  2. Once you setup backup codes in your 2-Step Verification options, Google will generate ten backup codes. Print out these codes or write them down, then store them securely. You can use each code only once. You can generate new codes if you need new ones or lose your existing ones.
What if I enroll to receive push notifications, then I go abroad and don't have cell data or wifi?
If you have a mobile phone or smartphone configured to receive a Google prompt, phone call, or SMS message, you won’t be able to use these options when you don’t have an active cell data or wifi connection. Before you go abroad, set up additional verification steps that work offline, including Authenticator codes, security key, or backup codes

Once I turn on 2SV, can I continue to use third-party programs that access my Kenyon Google account, like mail clients?
Yes. These programs, which include Apple Mail, Thunderbird, and Apple Calendar, are not inherently compatible with 2SV. To use them, first create an App password for that program, then open that program’s settings and replace your Kenyon password with the App password you created.

NOTE: Apps created by Google, including the Gmail and Google Calendar apps for iOS, are inherently compatible with 2SV. If you use these apps, you do not need to create an App password for them.
How do I remove a trusted computer from my 2SV settings?
Log into your 2SV settings, then click "Revoke All" under the Devices you trust heading.

What if I get a new phone?
If you have Google call your phone or send it an SMS message as a verification step, you shouldn’t need to change your 2SV settings so long as your new phone has the same phone number as your old phone.

If you received the Google prompt or configured an Authenticator program on your old phone, you must log into your 2SV settings and add the new phone before you can use this phone with your verification steps.

For assistance, contact Helpline at 1-740-427-5700 or helpline@kenyon.edu.

What if I lose my current phone?
If you also configured verification steps that don’t require your phone, such as a security key or backup codes, log into your 2SV settings and remove the old phone from any verification steps.

Otherwise, contact Helpline at 1-740-427-5700 or helpline@kenyon.edu for instructions or assistance.

Why isn’t my smartphone isn’t receiving SMS notifications/the Google Prompt?
First, log into your 2SV settings and confirm that you have enrolled the phone you are currently using with 2SV. (Even if you get a new phone with the same phone number as your old phone, your new phone will not receive the Google prompt notifications until you enroll it with 2SV.

Then confirm that your phone has a cell or wifi connection. If your phone is not connected to a network, it will not be able to receive push notifications or SMS messages from Google. Also check that your phone’s date and time are correct, as this can be a factor.

If none of these help, contact Helpline at 1-740-427-5700 or helpline@kenyon.edu.
