Protect Your Computer from Java Vulnerabilities

Step 1) Disable Java in Web Browsers

Chrome
  1. In the address bar, type chrome://plugins, then press the Return (or Enter) key.
  2. In the Plugins panel, find the Java (TM) plugin, then click Disable.
  3. Close and restart the browser to enable the changes.
Note: Alternatively, you can access the Plug-ins settings by typing about:plugins in the browser address bar.

Firefox
  1. In the address bar, type about:addons, then press the Return (or Enter) key.
  2. In the Add-ons Manager window, select Plugins.
  3. Find Java (TM) Platform.
  4. Select Never Activate from the options on its right.

Safari
  1. Select Safari > Preferences.
  2. Select Security.
  3. Deselect Enable Java.
  4. Close Safari Preferences window.

Step 2) Set Aside a Browser for Use only with Banner INB or Nolij
If you access Banner INB (not http://mybanner.kenyon.edu) or Nolij for your job at Kenyon, we recommend that you leave Java active in only one web browser, then use that browser only for Banner INB or Nolij. (If not, then you do not need to read the following instructions.)

Windows
Because it is not possible to disable Java in Internet Explorer, that browser must only be used to access Kenyon programs that require Java, such as Banner INB or Nolij. If you have been a regular Internet Explorer user, you'll want to use Firefox or Chrome as your default browser from now on. Call Helpline at (740) 427-5700 if you need assistance importing bookmarks or settings from Internet Explorer.

Helpline has created shortcuts to Internet Explorer named Banner INB and Nolij. Drag them to your desktop from P:\Public\Kenyon Applications\Shortcuts to help you remember to use Internet Explorer only to access these programs.

Apple
You may use any of the three browsers on your Kenyon Mac (Safari, Firefox, or Chrome) to access Banner INB or Nolij, but it should be a browser other than the one you currently use for your daily browsing. You should not disable Java in the browser you use for Banner/Nolij, but should not use it to browse any other sites. Be sure to disable Java in every other browser you regularly use.
