Protect Your Computer

  1. Set a password on the administrator account. An administrator account is present on every Windows and Apple computer. Some spyware and viruses actively seek out computers with no administrator account. Once inside the computer, the spyware has access to all of your files and the ability to make modify settings on your computer.
  2. Do not use the auto-login option on your computer. When you use an auto-login option, your computer does not require you to enter a password to log in. As in item #1, having no password means easy access for potentially harmful intruders.
  3. Every week, run a malware scan. Be sure to update the file definitions before you run the scan so you have the most recent versions. Helpline recommends Malwarebytes.
  4. Every week, check that your antivirus software is healthy and running updates. Update your antivirus program's definitions and scan your computer's entire hard drive at least twice each week.
Not sure if your computer has become infected with malicious software? If you have a laptop, bring it to Helpline for a consultation. If possible, call ahead 1-740-427-5700 to set an appointment.
